Join Janiss on Twitter

To all residents and staff:

Hi! It’s just Janiss, your friendly facility executive administrator (say that three times fast). I guess I could shorten that to FFEA. Anyway…

JanissAvatarTwitterHandleOn occasion, many of you have cornered me (not an easy thing to do) in the private wing to or from the blood lab, quizzing me about my “lifestyle.” Believe me when I tell you: I have less experience with being an immortal than a lot of college graduates have working fast food. Still, I get that you’re curious, so here’s what were going to do!

At Timothy’s request, I have created a Twitter account @janissconnelly for you to ask questions. Yes, this is also an effort to get all of YOU using social media (all except dear sweet Vivian, our resident social network queen). I talk about stargazing, hard rock music (feel free to ignore those), and paranormal romance books (yes, I freely admit to this).

If you have a specific question about how I get along as a vampire, follow me and I’ll follow back so you can send a DIRECT message. I have ONE request: let’s try to keep the vampire talk related to ME off the internet? Yes, even if no one believes it.

See you all online!

Playing With Imagery

Kevin here, author of The Matriarch series.

You might have noticed the “fang moon” on the cover of the original novel; this effect was hinted at as a dent on the cover of The Matriarch: Guardians (the cover is supposed to resemble a certain metal plate covering a grave).

As we speak, I am working on the final two covers for the series. Each of them will feature another variation of the fang moon, but this necklace turned out particularly well (and has inspired a friend to actually make one). Let’s see how good of a jewelry designer I am!

Here’s a preview; enjoy!

A Holiday Message from Janiss

With the holiday season upon us, I wanted to wish all staff and residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I cannot thank everyone enough for their hard work and contributions throughout the past twelve months. (Note: Timothy said it was important to start the memo like this.)

I would now like to address an issue that has come up on four separate occasions now, and I feel the need to make myself perfectly clear:

I will NEVER turn anyone into a vampire.

Anticipating your follow-up question (I do that), here’s why: it’s not going to fix everything for you.

That’s what you wanted, right? Immortality, fast healing, super senses, extra strength, everyone’s attention – bleh. Be happy and thankful for what you have and who you are, because if I were to fulfill any of these foolish requests, here’s what you’ll have to look forward to (and these are just off the top of my head).

1. Your desire for blood will occupy your every waking thought. Human blood only and it can’t be outside of a living body longer than an hour. That’s right – and since you don’t actually sleep anymore, you’ll never STOP thinking about it. A little will sustain you, but the amounts that can satisfy you for, oh, maybe six hours or so tend to leave your donors just a little bit dead. Got it? Good. Moving on.

2. You’ll want to be around normal people because that’s where the blood is. If you intend on keeping any friends – and you’ll want to in ways you cannot imagine – you’ll need to be ready to send them off or walk away in a heartbeat, no questions asked. You’ve invested a lot of time making the friends you have – you did want to keep them, right?

3. Forget traveling on a whim; there are no daylight vampire hotels. I call it vampire paranoia, that unshakable feeling that you aren’t safe, especially when you’re dying to rest. Also, while sunlight doesn’t kill you (not much does) you’ll feel like a corpse every moment the sun’s up and you’re not in the ground (read: not just sleeping on dirt but actually interred into an earthen grave.) Remember getting claustrophobic trying to squeeze through a tiny space, that terrifying fear you’ll never get back out again? Imagine the opposite of that: it’s the ONLY place you feel safe when you need to rest because nothing else can get in. I’m not kidding.

4. Obsessive Compulsive Vampire Disorder or OCVD – this might be the worst thing. Heightened senses have a drawback: you notice EVERYTHING, and everything is hard to ignore. That cologne Bob used just a little of? What Amy’s hands smell like after she’s used the restroom and didn’t wash? (Note: Bob and Amy aren’t real people…you know who you are.) And if you don’t keep your mind on task and focused, you start straightening things, counting things, and being bothered by all the little things. That Disney ice queen song? Let it go or else. (I really wanted to say “or Elsa.” What? I like that movie.)

5. Vampires forget nothing. Your worst mistakes actually talk to you – and I mean forever – and only other vampires won’t think you’re nuts. Remember mathematician John Forbes Nash, Jr. from West Virginia who said he imagined seeing people? Same thing, except…well, that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Regimen and routine help, but Cedarcrest is the real reason I can cope; being a vampire is manageable with a little forethought. If you were looking forward to becoming a mindless predator, however, please schedule some talk time with Dr. Faust and feel free to share any and all details with her.

Finally: don’t feel sorry for me.

I’ve come to terms with what I am, but I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. See how much I like all of you?

Cedarcrest comfortably supports one vampire; two would be pushing it. Five is right out.

Okay? Okay.

Happy holidays, everyone – and here’s to a bright new year.

The Matriarch Tetralogy

Kevin here, author of The Matriarch series.

Both The Matriarch and its sequel The Matriarch: Guardians continue to find new fans, and that’s thanks to readers like you who subscribe to sites like this.

If you look carefully at CedarcrestSanctum.com, you’ll notice a few changes. One is a more compact menu as well as local sunset and sunrise information; Janiss uses these to keep track of the length of her nights. Also of note is the line beneath the moniker “Sixty residents. Forty staff. One immortal” has been replaced with a familiar looking weapon:

DecapitatorAssebledLength460px

That bar is a hot link to a page featuring The Decapitator, a unique weapon in the world of The Matriarch. I had one constructed as a conversation and inspiration piece, but the ability to order one for yourself is coming soon.

Under “Library Assets” in the lower right corner, you’ll also notice two new books with blank covers. The reason for this is simple: The Matriarch series will become a tetralogy, four books in all when finished. The names of these new books and the stories they will tell are already in the planning; the first draft of the third book should be done by the end of November and hopefully released the following Spring.

Finally, a request: if you have enjoyed one or both Matriarch books, I implore you to leave a rating, a few words, and recommend this series to a friend.

It’s easy! If you purchased the Kindle version, open your app, select one of the Matriarch books from your Library, scroll past the last page for the five-star rating option to leave a few words in review. If you have the paperback, log into Amazon and go to http://www.amazon.com/author/kevinaranson, select the correct book, then scroll down to “Customer reviews” and select “Add a review” to rate the book and leave a few words.

Thank you for reading and watch for more news coming soon!

Crowd Control

To: Janiss Connelly
Re: “Crowd Control”

These are the craftsmen I mentioned to you last month. They have begun discreet work on the items we requested and sent the following images showcasing their progress. I am not an expert, but these look very capable. Once we’ve seen and tested the finished product, we can determine how many we’ll need.

Summer Solstice Cook Out

To all residents and staffers,

Today is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year – not our Executive Administrator’s favorite time; please show her kindness tonight.

A few of the residents have arranged a get-together this evening in the new greenhouse. There will be a cookout, so for those in the mood for outdoor grilling, please respond to this email to make arrangements. (Personal note to Ruth White: yes, I’ll be in attendance this time, and no, you don’t have to keep sending people up to the office to find out “when.”)

Additional reminder: “Phase Three” is nearly complete and we hope to organize a tour of the new facility very soon. More information will be passed along as it becomes available, so check your email often for continued updates.

As always, residents receive complimentary copies but interested staffers are required to purchase copies of their own ; links to these books have been included for your convenience.
